The OKKA project focuses on implementing an autonomous ferry system that is technically safe and reliable, as well as economically viable for direct crossings of inland waterways. The research area is Kiel Canal.
The project partners aim to develop an autonomous (highly automated) canal ferry capable of crossing the heavily trafficked Kiel Canal under real conditions. A ferry and a terminal will be temporarily outfitted with additional technical systems to enable initial autonomous operation. In addition to crossing the canal independently, the research project will also examine automated departure and arrival.
The project will also identify additional framework conditions for autonomous ferry operation and develop solutions. This includes the integration of human-machine interfaces (HMI), in addition to formal criteria and technical restrictions.
